There are two types of antivirus software for SharePoint servers which can impact SharePoint 2013 performance:

Operating System Antivirus

Conventional Operating System antivirus solutions protect memory and disk against viruses (e.g. Windows Security Essentials).

We strongly recommend the following exclusion for anti virus solutions which can cause severe performance issues.

SQL Server Configuration

Configure antivirus to ignore SQL Server related processes and files:

  • Process exclusions - %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\SQLServr.exe
  • File exclusions - By file type all MDF, LDF, NDF, MDB files
  • Folder exclusions - Paths to your database and backup files (typically on a separate drive)

SharePoint Server Configuration

Configure antivirus to ignore the following working directories on all SharePoint servers:

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\ (or specific folders below)
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Data\
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Logs\
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Bin\
    • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\15.0\Synchronization Service\
  • C:\Windows/System32/LogFiles\
  • C:\Windows/SysWOW64/LogFiles\
  • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\
  • C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Temp\
  • C:\Users\<ServiceAccounts>\AppData\Local\Temp\
  • C:\Blobcache\ (location may vary)
  • C:\Logs\ (location may vary)
  • C:\Data\SearchIndex\ (location may vary)

Hyper-V Configuration

Configure antivirus to ignore Hyper-V related processes and files:

  • Process exclusions - Vmms.exe, Vmwp.exe
  • File exclusions - By file type All VHD, VHDX, AVHD, VSV, ISO files
  • Folder exclusions
    • C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V
    • C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks
    • Custom virtual machine configuration directories
    • Custom virtual hard disk drive directories
    • Snapshot directories

SharePoint Antivirus

Various third party vendors provide SharePoint antivirus solutions which scan and protect against malicious SharePoint content. Microsoft recommends that customers deploy antivirus solutions which use the SharePoint Virus API.

All of these products are designed for use with SharePoint and if correctly configured no further performance optimization is suggested. The only available option is increasing server resources or improving physical hardware.
